LoCànan agus Òran Gaelic Language and Song Workshop 2026
The Gaelic Society of Toronto and the Celtic Studies Course Union - University of Toronto will be holding a day of Gaelic language and song for learners of Scottish Gaelic on April 18 2026.

We are honoured and pleased to have Donald S. Murray, Honorary Fellow of the Association for Scottish Literature and prolific author, as our Advanced class Instructor this year.
The guest teachers for this date are as follows:
- Donald S. Murray - Advanced Language class Instructor - Donald Murray is an award-winning Scottish writer and native Gaelic speaker from the Isle of Lewis, who now lives in Shetland. More about Donald here: Donald S. Murray
- Dr. Nathaniel Harrington - Intermediate Language class Instructor - Nat is a writer, scholar, and translator based in Toronto who has taught Gaelic classes at multiple levels through community organizations in Ontario and at St. Francis Xavier University.
- David Livingston-Lowe - Beginner II class Instructor & Song Workshop Leader- David is a member of the staff in the University of Toronto Celtic Studies Program and an experienced Gaelic educator in Celtic languages.
- Kerrie Kennedy - Beginner I class Instructor - long-time Gaelic language Instructor with Comunn Luchd-Ionnsaidhaidh/Toronto Gaelic Learners Association
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BEGINNER II CLASS WILL NOT RUN DUE TO LOW ENROLMENT. DAVID LIVINGSTONE-LOWE WILL BE THE CLASS INSTRUCTOR FOR THE INTERMEDIATE CLASS INSTEAD.
Date: Saturday April 18 2026
Time: 9am - 3pm, Song workshop 3 - 4pm
Location: University of St. Michaels College, Alumni Hall - 121 St. Joseph St., Toronto Ontario
Cost: $50 per person; $40 - Gaelic Society members; $25 - Non-U of T students. The cost for the day is free to U of T students and native speakers.
The Cànan agus Òran day will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will include language classes and a song workshop. Classes will be offered at the Beginner, Beginner II, Intermediate, and Advanced levels, providing there is sufficient registration per each level.
For lunch, you can bring your own lunch and eat onsite or you can take advantage of nearby options to purchase lunch. Sufficient time will be available for this.
The song workshop, beginning at 3 p.m., will be led by David Livingston-Lowe, focusing on the long and unique tradition of Gaelic spiritual music and psalm-singing.
Note: The song workshop is open to people free of charge if unable to attend the full day, however you MUST register for this at the link below.
As usual, there will be a Book table with new and used books available for purchase. As well, some of Donald's titles will be available for purchase:
"As the Women Lay Dreaming", "The Salt and the Flame", "Leaving Songs" and other possible titles TBA.
Please plan to join us afterwards for a social/céilidh at a location to be determined.
