Comunn Gàidhlig Thoronto / The Gaelic Society of Toronto was formed with the goal of keeping alive a knowledge of the Gaelic language and culture and connecting Gaelic-speaking people in Toronto and surrounding areas.  Throughout the changes in its structure over the years, the Society continues to support and sustain Gaelic language, history, culture and community in various ways, either through the direct activities of the Society or by supporting the efforts of others who also seek to sustain and promote the Gaelic language and culture.

The Gaelic Society of Toronto has had a long, social history. Established in 1887, the heart of the Society is the camaraderie; it is even written into the motto:

"Clanna nan Gàidheal ri guaillean a chéile.
Children of the Gael, shoulder to shoulder."

We are forever connected to Scotland through the language.

Our volunteer Board of Directors works tirelessly to put together events throughout the year to continue with this endeavour. Over the past few years, we have offered:

  • Cànan agus Òran, the Gaelic language and song workshop
  • Oidhche nam Bàrd, celebrating Scottish Gaelic Poetry
  • Gaelic Film Days
  • Monthly Friday night Ceilidhs
  • Online Fèis weekend with an extensive lineup of Gaidhlig entertainment
  • Gaelic Language Classes with renowned teachers; Archie Campbell and Jason Bond
  • Speaker Series
  • Young Pipers Championship
  • Harris Distillery tour and Gin tasting

We have also
  • hosted a Gaelic Resource booth at various Scottish Festivals and Highland Games throughout Ontario
  • Participated in the Scottish North American Community Conference
  • Contributed Patron funding to support the translation of Anne of Green Gables into Gaelic
  • provided Financial support for the Ryan Russell Memorial Youth Pipe Band, scholarships for students to attend various Gaelic Language programs
  • presented several Language and song workshops & concerts with renowned singer and educator Gìllebride MacIlleMhaol / Gìllebride MacMillan
