COVID-19 Cancellation update

3/16/2020

As you know, the spread of COVID-19 continues to impact every aspect of society around the world and within Canada. The World Health Organization has now declared it a Pandemic.

In view of this, The Gaelic Society of Toronto will suspend all events until further notice to assist in reducing the potential spread of COVID-19, the Coronavirus. We have made the proactive decision in order to prioritize the health and wellness of our members and guests. The continued spread of COVID-19 in Canada and around the world is concerning and we will follow the Public Health Agency of Canada recommendations.  The cancellation of our Ceilidhs, Young Pipers Championship and Canan agus Oran is temporary and is the best way to safeguard the well-being of our members. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to our members, guests and young competitors.

As no one knows precisely when this situation will change for the better or how long the contagion will last, at this time we are unable to advise you of when our activities will resume.
In these challenging times, rest assured that we will continue to make the best decisions we can for everyone’s well-being. Thanking you in advance for your understanding and your loyalty to The Gaelic Society of Toronto.

We hope that you and your family will stay safe and healthy.

Cànan agus Òran - Gaelic Language and Song Workshop

3/1/2020

The Gaelic Society of Toronto will be holding a day of Gaelic language and song for learners of Scottish Gaelic on April 4, 2020.

The guest teachers for this date are as follows:
  • Chrissie Drake - a native speaker from Lewis and Harris, Scotland
  • Lorrie MacKinnon - long-time Cànan agus Òran organizer
  • David Livingston-Lowe - David is a member of the staff in the University of Toronto Celtic Studies Program and an experienced Gaelic educator in many Celtic languages.

The Cànan agus Òran day will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Carr Hall, 100 St. Joseph Street (Saint Michael’s College, University of Toronto), Toronto, Ontario.  The day will include of language classes and a song workshop.  Classes will be offered at the Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels.  Should there be enough interest, a Beginner II (between beginner and intermediate) session will also be offered.

The cost for each day is $45 (+ processing fees), free to U of T students, $25 to non-U of T students (+ processing fees) and free to native speakers.

Early Bird Registration- 20% off discount – Registrations (including cheque or money order) received two weeks in advance (March 21, 2020) pay $36, non-U of T students $20 (+ processing fees).

We have had the venue free of charge for many years. That benefit is no longer available to us.  The registration fee has been increased by a small amount after many years with no increase.  Rather than raise the fee by a higher amount, we ask those who are able to make a donation in addition to the registration to offset the new and not insignificant venue charges, with our thanks.

Please plan to join us afterwards for a social/ceilidh at a location to be determined.
For more information, call Lorrie at (905) 844-4908

Registration and payment via credit card/PayPal is available here:

If you prefer to mail in your registration information and payment, you can print off the registration form here
If you prefer to register and pay online, you can register here and complete payment below; you can add a donation if you like as well.
